Questions about AC cleaning
How do I know my AC needs cleaning?
The clearest signs are weak cold airflow, a damp or musty smell when the unit runs, dripping water from the indoor unit, and dust specks or black marks blowing from the vents. If a long time has passed since the last clean, a check alone is a good reason to call.
What is the difference between cleaning a split and a central AC?
A split unit has two separate parts, indoor and outdoor, cleaned one at a time in each room. A central system has one main air-handling unit connected to ducts and vents throughout the building, and cleaning covers the main unit and the vents. Does the self-clean function on my AC replace manual cleaning?
No, it does not. Some units carry a self-clean split AC function that dries the inside of the unit to reduce moisture, but it does not remove dust that has built up on the coil or the fan drum. Manual cleaning of the coil, fan and drain line is still needed regardless of that function.
Can I clean the AC filter myself?
The mesh filter in many split units can be removed and washed at home. However, cleaning internal parts such as the coil and fan goes further than what a self-clean split AC cycle does, and it needs a different approach that protects the fine fins from damage.
