Carpets and the majlis receive your guests the most, and they take the most dust and spills.
Regular care protects them and delays the need for a deep clean.
These are simple tips you can follow yourself, with no special tools.
For carpets
- Vacuum regularly. Built-up dust works into the fibers and is harder to remove later.
- Treat a spill right away. Lay a clean, dry cloth on it to soak up the liquid. Do not rub, because rubbing pushes it deeper.
- Start with the gentlest method. Try water or a mild cleaner, and test any product on a hidden corner first.
- Avoid strong bleach on colored carpets.
- Move the carpet around from time to time, so one walking path does not wear out and one side does not fade.
For majlis cushions and backrests
- Air them in the shade now and then. Fresh air reduces trapped smells.
- Avoid long, direct sun. It fades colors.
- Follow the care label on the fabric. If the covers come off, wash them as the label says.
- Do not soak the filling. If it gets wet, dry it completely before use.
- Swap the cushions around from time to time, so the use is shared across all of them.
- Wipe up coffee and tea at once. They are what spills on a majlis most.
Daily habits that protect carpets
- Take shoes off at the entrance of the majlis or living room.
- Put a small mat at the door to catch dust.
- Put protective pads under the legs of heavy furniture, so they do not leave marks in the carpet.
Dry it completely
A carpet or cushion that stays damp picks up a bad smell.
So:
- Open the windows or run the AC after washing.
- Do not put furniture back until the carpet is fully dry.
- Do not fold or store a damp carpet.
Drying can take longer in closed spaces, so give it enough time.
When to call a professional
Home care may not be enough in some cases:
- A large or old stain that will not come out.
- A smell that stays after airing.
- A carpet that looks dull from built-up dirt.
- Before guests arrive or an event at home.
- An old, expensive or hand-made carpet: ask first which method suits its type.
