When Does a Water Tank Need Cleaning?

A water tank is out of sight, so it is easy to forget.

But the water that reaches your kitchen and bathrooms passes through it.

That is why it needs regular cleaning.

Why it matters

Over time, dust and sediment build up at the bottom of the tank.

Dirt or insects can also get in if the lid is not tight.

You cannot see any of it, because the tank is covered and out of view.

Signs to watch for

If you notice one or more of these signs, it is time to have the tank checked:

  • A change in the taste, smell or color of the water.
  • Particles or sediment in a glass or at the tap.
  • Frequent clogging in filters or tap heads.
  • Algae or a slimy layer on the tank walls when you open the lid.
  • Insects or dirt inside the tank, or a broken or loose lid.

When to clean even without signs

  • Before moving into a new home, or after a home has been closed for a long time.
  • After construction, renovation or pipe repairs.
  • At regular intervals. Ask a specialist what interval suits your tank and how you use it.
  • When a long time has passed and you do not remember when it was last cleaned.

Before the cleaning

These steps make the work easier and keep you safe:

  • Do not climb into the tank yourself. It is an enclosed space, the air may not be safe, and the floor is slippery.
  • Tell your household, and the residents of the building if the tank is shared, when the water will be off. The tank is emptied during cleaning.
  • Store enough water for that time.
  • Work out where the tank is and how to reach it: on the roof or underground, and whether the opening is accessible. It makes the job easier to plan.
  • Ask about disinfection after the cleaning, and how the tank will be refilled.

After the cleaning

  • Refill the tank and let the water run from the taps until it runs clear.
  • Watch the taste and smell over the next few days.
  • Keep a note of the date of the last cleaning, so you know when to repeat it.
  • If the signs come back, contact whoever cleaned the tank.
  • Check that the lid is tight, so dust and insects cannot get in.
