Fire-ant control

A painful sting, or small mounds appearing in the garden or near the floor edges? Fire ants build their nest under the surface, and treatment starts there.

What the service includes

What does fire-ant control cover?

Fire ants are different in one thing many people discover the hard way: a burning sting. The real problem is not the sting but the hidden nest under the soil, behind a floor edge or in a yard corner. The summer heat pushes colonies deeper into moist soil near pipes or irrigation lines, which is why surface treatment alone rarely ends the problem.

Tell us what you are seeing: where the stings happened, whether there are mounds, which district you are in, and we agree a time. We locate the nest sites and treat at the source.

These are the sites and steps the treatment goes through, depending on where the nest is and the extent of the infestation in your home.

  • Locating nest sites

We follow the fire-ant trail back to where it starts, whether a mound in the soil, a wall crack or a floor edge, because treatment that misses the nest never reaches the queen.

  • Soil and earth mounds

Fire ants build their nests as mounds that go deeper than they look. We treat the soil at and around each mound so treatment reaches the nest chambers below the surface.

  • Cracks and floor edges

Fire ants often enter through wall cracks or gaps between tiles and skirting. We treat these entry points to cut the route between outside and inside.

  • Garden and outdoor yard

gardens and yards are a natural setting for fire-ant nests near planters, irrigation lines or stones. These are treated as part of the same session when present.

  • Indoor movement trails

When fire ants reach the kitchen or living areas we follow the trail and treat the movement line, because breaking it weakens the link between workers and the nest.

  • Areas around the nest

Around the main nest there are sometimes small satellite colonies. We check the surrounding area to find and treat them, because leaving them risks the colony rebuilding from those points.

Questions

Questions about Fire-ant control

How do I know what I am seeing is fire ants and not another type?

Fire ants have two signs: a burning sting that leaves a painful red mark on the skin, and the earth mound in soil or grass. They are reddish-brown and medium-sized. If you notice a mound in the garden and someone has had a burning sting, it is worth checking.

The fire ants are only in the garden. Does the inside need treating too?

If fire ants are confined to the garden, treatment focuses on the soil and outdoor nests. However, they follow food and moisture and often find their way inside through floor cracks. We assess this during the visit and treat wherever they are present.

What should I prepare in the garden before the team arrives?

Point out the mounds or spots where you noticed activity, and mention any potted plants near nest areas when you call. Keep children and pets away during and after treatment, and wait for it to dry before using the yard again.

Fire ants came back in the same spot after treatment. What should I do?

Return in the same spot can mean a satellite colony was missed or the queen was in a deeper layer. Call us and describe what you see, whether a new mound has appeared or trails are showing nearby, and we agree the right next step.

Should I break up the mounds myself before treatment?

Breaking the mound disperses the colony and makes locating the nest harder, and can cause the queen to move. Leave the mounds as they are and tell us where they are, because their position helps us find and treat the nest centre accurately.
