What does hand-made carpet cleaning cover?
A hand-knotted carpet is built on tied knots running from fringe to fringe, and between those knots fine dust and sand settle in places no vacuum can reach. The longer it stays, the stiffer the fibres become at the root, and you feel the difference in the texture before you see it in the colour.
Call or WhatsApp us, tell us the type of carpet, what you have noticed, and your district, and we agree a time to collect it or come to you.
These are the stages a hand-made carpet goes through, depending on its fibre type, its condition and what you notice in it.
- Fibre and dye check
Before work starts the fibres are checked, whether wool, silk or plant-based thread, and the dye stability is tested, because the washing method changes according to what each material can take.
- Dry dust removal
The carpet is shaken to work dry dust and sand out from between the knots before any wetting, because leaving it in turns it to mud that is hard to separate from the threads.
- Knot and pile washing
The knotted pile is washed in a way suited to the fibre; wool takes a different temperature and pressure from silk, which excess heat damages and dulls.
- Fringe and edges
The cotton or wool fringe is cleaned carefully because it picks up dirt quickly and distorts if pulled, and it is the first thing the eye catches on the carpet.
- Backing and underside
The backing is inspected and the underside cleaned, since dust builds up there unseen and can weaken the weft threads that hold the knots in place.
- Air drying
The hand-made carpet is dried in open air away from direct sun and strong heat, because fast drying distorts its shape and makes the fibres brittle.
Four steps, and done

Call or message us on WhatsApp

Tell us about your carpet
Tell us the fibre type if you know it, what change you have noticed in texture, colour or smell, and which district you are in.
- 3
We agree a time
We agree a convenient time to collect the carpet or come to you, and you roll the fringe in gently so it does not crease before collection.
- 4
Cleaning and return
We wash the carpet in a way that suits its weave fibres and dry it thoroughly. When you receive it, feel the pile by hand and check the fringe and backing before you lay it out.

Questions about Hand-made carpet cleaning
How do I know my hand-made carpet needs a full wash rather than just shaking?
If dust stays at the base of the pile after shaking, the texture has changed and the fibres feel rough to the touch, or a smell of damp or trapped smoke is in the carpet, dirt has reached the knots. Shaking alone cannot reach what has settled deep between the weft and the warp.
Do I need to know my carpet's fibre type before I call?
You do not need to know exactly in advance. Describing what you notice and whether the carpet feels silky or coarse, and whether the fringe seems cotton or wool, is enough to start. The precise fibre and dye check happens when we receive the carpet.
I washed my hand-made carpet with hot water at home and it shrank, is that common?
Yes, natural wool in hand-made carpets shrinks in hot water because the protein fibre structure compresses under heat. This is one reason the fibres are checked before washing and the water temperature is set to match the material, to avoid damage that cannot be undone.
What makes washing a hand-made carpet different from washing a machine-made one?
A hand-made carpet is built on hand-tied knots, and its dyes are often natural or old and more sensitive to water, heat and pressure. Machine-made carpets have fibres pushed into an adhesive backing and synthetic dyes that hold better, so the method itself differs, not just the time or effort.
What should I check when my hand-made carpet is returned after cleaning?
Lay the carpet flat and check that the fringe lies evenly on both sides, then run your hand along the pile in one direction to feel that it is soft and flexible. Look at any area that had heavy soiling or a visible colour change, and make sure the backing is fully dry before you lay the carpet on the floor.
