What does blackout curtain wash cover?
Blackout curtains are built from two or more layers: a dense outer fabric, an opaque lining bonded to the back, and sometimes a thermal interlining between them. This construction makes them heavier than ordinary curtains, and that is part of why it is easy to miss that dust and odours have worked deep into those layers rather than sitting on the surface.
We start when you call or message us on WhatsApp. You tell us about the blackout curtains you have and which district you are in, and we agree a time to collect the curtains and return them.
These are the parts the work usually goes through, depending on the curtain's condition, the number of layers and how it is hung.
- The outer dense fabric
The outer opaque fabric is washed in a way that suits its construction, because too much agitation or heat can distort it or separate its bonded layers.
- The opaque lining
The back lining is what stops light getting through, and it absorbs moisture and dust from its hidden side, so the wash reaches it directly.
- The thermal interlining
When there is a thermal interlining between the two fabrics, it needs care during washing so it does not shrink or pull away from the layers next to it.
- Rings and hooks
Rings and hooks are removed before washing where possible, as they trap dirt and can damage the fabric around them if left in place.
- The header tape
The header tape at the top collects the most dust and can pucker if not handled carefully, so it is given attention at every stage.
- The hem and weight tape
The bottom hem sometimes carries a weight tape that keeps the curtain hanging straight, and this is checked after washing to make sure it still works as it should.

Questions about Blackout curtain wash
Why are blackout curtains washed differently from other curtains?
Blackout curtains are made from two or more layers that are bonded or stitched together, and too much heat or agitation can melt the bonding or leave the lining puckered. That is why they are handled differently from chiffon or lightweight curtains, which can take other methods.
What should I prepare before you come to collect the curtains?
It helps to take the curtains down from the rail, fold each one separately and keep its rings with it. If the curtains are fixed in a way that is hard to reach or the ceiling is high, mention that when we agree the time so we can prepare.
My blackout curtains are very heavy, does that affect the wash?
Extra weight usually means there is a thermal interlining between the fabrics, or a denser-than-usual outer fabric. Both affect how the curtains are handled and affect the price too, so tell us as much as you can when you call.
What do I check when I get the curtains back after washing?
Check that the back lining is still bonded to the outer fabric and has not come away, that the fabric lies flat without puckering, and that the header tape and the weight tape at the bottom are as they were.
Do floor-length blackout curtains need washing more often?
A curtain that touches or nearly touches the floor picks up floor dust and moisture from the bottom edge, especially where fine sand works its way under doors. That lower section of the blackout fabric gets dirty faster than the rest, and it is worth pointing out when you describe the curtains to us.
