Ground-tank cleaning

Sediment settles quietly at the bottom of a ground tank, and everything the pump sends up passes through it first. We empty it and clean it from the inside.

What the service includes

What does ground-tank cleaning cover?

The ground tank in many homes and buildings is the large tank that takes water from the supply line and feeds the rooftop tank through a pump. Dust finds its way in through a loose or unsealed lid, and heavy sediment settles on the floor over time. Whatever collects there is pumped upward and into the rest of the building with every cycle.

Call or WhatsApp us, tell us your district, the tank size and how the hatch is accessed, and we agree a time along with what you need to prepare before we arrive.

These are the parts the cleaning goes through, depending on the tank's size, condition and the material it is made from.

  • Emptying the tank

The remaining water is pumped out or drained before work begins, because the walls and floor cannot be cleaned while the tank holds water. This step sets the start of the actual work.

  • Floor and sediment

Heavy deposits of silt, sand and mineral scale settle on the floor and harden over time. They are removed by hand and swept out before rinsing.

  • Walls and corners

Algae and bacteria cling to the tank walls in corners and at the waterline. They are scraped and scrubbed carefully, because dark corners are the spots most often missed.

  • Lid and hatch

The lid is checked and cleaned on both sides, removing scale and rust, because a lid that no longer seals properly is the main entry point for dust and insects.

  • Pump and float area

We check that the pump intake area and the float are free of deposits and obstructions that affect how the pump works or whether the water stops when the tank is full.

  • Final rinse

The tank is rinsed thoroughly and the rinse water drained before refilling, so any remaining residue from the walls or floor is flushed out with it.

  3. 3

    Agree time and preparation

We settle on a time, and you clear the path to the hatch and ensure you have enough stored water for household use during the cleaning.

Questions

Questions about Ground-tank cleaning

How do I know my ground tank needs cleaning?

Signs include cloudy or discoloured water, a smell when the tap runs, or a dark brown film visible on the tank walls when the lid is opened. If you cannot remember when it was last cleaned, or if there has been building or pipe work nearby, a check makes sense.

Why should I not clean the ground tank myself?

A ground tank is a confined space entered through a narrow hatch, and gas build-up is possible, especially in older large concrete tanks. Removing hardened sediment from the floor and scrubbing corners properly also needs the right preparation. Call us and we agree on how to proceed.

What should I prepare before ground-tank cleaning?

Make sure you have enough stored water for household use while the work is done, and clear the path to the tank hatch. If the tank is in a shared building, tell the building management in advance so access is not blocked.

What affects the cost of cleaning a ground tank?

The cost depends on the tank size, its material whether concrete, fibreglass or plastic, how easy the hatch is to reach, and how much sediment has built up. Tell us the details when you call and we agree on a price.

Does a broken ground-tank lid affect the water quality?

Yes. A lid that does not seal is the main entry point for dust, insects and debris. The tank itself may be buried or in a dark location, but a broken or missing lid removes that protection. We inspect and clean the lid as part of the job, and if it needs repair or replacement we let you know when you call.
