What does water-tank painting cover?
The inside surface of a concrete or fibreglass tank is exposed to the sharp swings between summer heat and cooler months, and it slowly cracks or loses its old coating. When the paint flakes, particles float into the water, and cracks become places where sediment and algae settle. What is easy to miss is that a crack begins narrow and widens with each season of expansion and contraction.
We clean and dry the inside of the tank before applying the paint, then coat the walls, the floor and the interior ceiling in even layers. Call or message us on WhatsApp, tell us the type of tank and your district, and we agree a time.
These are the stages the tank goes through, from preparation to the final coat, depending on the condition of its interior surface.
- Emptying and drying
Paint does not bond to a wet surface, so the tank is emptied and left until the interior wall is dry before anything else is done.
- Removing old paint
Flaking or crumbling paint is taken off the walls and floor, because a new coat does not adhere well over a loose or powdery surface.
- Treating cracks
Cracks and gaps in the interior surface are treated before painting so they do not grow beneath the new coat and lift it away from the wall.
- Painting walls and floor
The tank walls and floor are painted in even layers, with attention to corners and the areas where moisture tends to collect.
- Painting the interior ceiling
The interior ceiling of the tank is sometimes overlooked, yet it is exposed to rising moisture from the water, and painting it completes the protection.
- Drying time and check
After finishing, the paint needs full drying time before the tank is refilled, and that is something we agree with you at the time of the visit.

Questions about Water-tank painting
How do I know my tank needs painting and not just cleaning?
If you notice cracks on the interior walls, paint flaking off and leaving residue in the water, or a rough eroded surface that is hard to clean, then painting is the right step after cleaning. If the walls are intact and all the tank needs is sediment and algae removed, cleaning alone is enough.
Does tank painting work on all tank types?
Interior painting is common in concrete tanks because the surface is porous, absorbs moisture and cracks over time. Fibreglass and plastic tanks have smoother surfaces and crack less, but they are painted too when needed. The material and the condition of the surface determine what is required, and that is what we agree once you tell us your tank type.
What should I prepare before the tank painting appointment?
The main requirement is to have the tank emptied before we arrive and the access hatch or cover clear of obstructions. In a shared building, it is a good idea to let neighbours know about the water interruption in advance so they can prepare.
What affects the cost of painting a tank?
The cost depends on the size and material of the tank and the condition of the interior surface. A large tank with many cracks needs longer preparation and more coats. Access also matters, whether the tank is underground or on the roof. Share these details when you call and we agree the price.
How long do I wait before refilling the tank after painting?
The waiting time depends on the type of paint used and the air temperature at the time of application. The hot weather can speed up drying at times, but the tank should not be refilled before the coat is fully cured. We agree that period with you at the appointment based on the actual conditions.
